QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS (QCDS)

What is Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)?

Individuals aged 70½ or older with a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or a Roth IRA have the option to make Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) of up to $100,000 per year directly to LightHawk. QCDs count towards the required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year and provide a tax-efficient means to support conservation efforts. By utilizing QCDs, donors can maximize the impact of their charitable giving while reducing taxable income and contributing to LightHawk’s mission of protecting our planet’s natural heritage.

Benefits

  • RMD Satisfaction: If you’re 73 or older, your gift can fulfill your required minimum distribution (RMD) obligation.
  • Tax Penalty Avoidance: By making a gift, you may avoid the income tax penalty on your distributions.
  • Immediate Impact: Experience the satisfaction of witnessing your gift in action as it directly supports essential conservation initiatives nationwide.

Maximize the impact of your Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) with these three simple steps:

  1. Instruct your IRA custodian to transfer the specified amount to LightHawk, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization (Federal ID #84-0852104), at the following address:  LightHawk, PO Box 2751, Grand Junction, CO 81502
  2. Notify LightHawk at [email protected] or (970) 797-9355 ext. 12. Promptly informing LightHawk of your QCD ensures swift action on our part.
  3. Receive your acknowledgment letter and enjoy the tax benefits, knowing that your QCD will directly contribute to advancing conservation efforts.

Other Considerations

If you’re still working and adding to your retirement account, making a gift in this manner might affect your taxable income. It’s best to talk to your financial advisor before giving. If you’re under 70½, you can still use your IRA to help LightHawk by taking a withdrawal and making your gift after taxes. Or simply name LightHawk as a beneficiary of your retirement plan.
