A Tax-Smart Way to Give
Giving appreciated stock can be a simple way to make a meaningful gift to LightHawk while also taking advantage of potential tax benefits. If you donate securities held for more than one year, you may generally be eligible to deduct their fair market value, subject to tax rules and limitations, while avoiding capital gains tax that could apply if you sold them first.
We encourage you to consult your financial or tax advisor to determine what’s right for your situation.
Give Stock in Three Simple Steps
1
Instruct your stockbroker to transfer the shares.
Provide your broker with the name and number of shares you wish to donate, along with LightHawk’s transfer information:
| Receiving Broker | Vanguard |
| For the Benefit Of | LightHawk |
| DTC Number | 0062 |
| Account Number | 85654498 |
| Federal Tax ID | 84-0852104 |
2
Notify LightHawk of your gift.
Email [email protected] or call (970) 797-9355 ext. 12 with your name and information about the securities being transferred. Because brokerage transfers may arrive without donor-identifying information, notifying us helps ensure we can properly acknowledge your gift.
3
Receive your acknowledgment.
Once your gift is received, LightHawk will send you a written acknowledgment for your records. IRS substantiation requirements apply to charitable gifts, including noncash contributions.
One more thing: If possible, ask your broker to include your name and contact information with the transfer so we can identify and acknowledge your gift promptly.
