Marine Protected Areas

For establishing marine protected areas, LightHawk flights help foster collaboration and build public support from 1,000 feet above the sea. Beginning in 2006, flights in California have been instrumental in helping transform static lines on a map into marine protected areas.

Photography flights captured iconic images of coastal landmarks and soon-to-be protected coastal waters. Stakeholders and decision-makers saw living, blue expanses of ocean beneath them rather than a seemingly endless thin blue line of water stretching to the horizon. Scientific survey flights provided invaluable data and established credibility in the effort. And media flights educated a wider audience about these proposed marine sanctuaries.
