Fly In to Protect the Yosemites of the Sea:

California’s Marine Protected Areas

San Diego, California

October 1-4, 2010

Please join us for the annual LightHawk Fly-In.

Catch up with fellow fliers, celebrate LightHawk’s role in creating protected areas along the California coast and enjoy an interesting and informative program of events.

A historic decision on California's Marine Protected Areas is expected toward the end of the year, so program flights on October 4th will help generate some extra attention for this effort that LightHawk has committed many missions to over the past few years.

Events

Friday October 1st - casual evening reception honoring LightHawk's volunteer pilots.

Saturday October 2nd - Adventurous all-day program including:

Renowned National Geographic and iLCP underwater photographer, Brian Skerry delivers the keynote address. Brian has spent more than 10,000 hours beneath the surface and has documented marine reserves, coral reefs, the plight of the right whale, sharks of the Bahamas, sea turtles and squid. He has dived everywhere from warm tropical waters to below Arctic ice.

The Kings of aviation, John and Martha King will share tales of their experiences training the pilots of the Kenya Wildlife Service who use aviation to protect wildlife. Until the Kings' visit, these noble pilots flew low-altitude ground reference maneuvers in Huskies and Super Cubs, but, under the Kenyan system, had no formal training.

Volunteer pilots Ken and Gabrielle Adelman will talk about their adventure photographing the entire coast of California for their California Coastal Records Project.

Sunday October 3rd - Free day to explore San Diego or visit the Miramar Air Show.

0800 - 1030 Mesoamerica Pilots Roundtable - breakfast buffet and discussion. Moderated by Brian Williams. All current and interested Meso Program Pilots should attend.

Monday October 4th - Media and educational flights for participating pilots.
